Class Gone WrongfritzApr 19, 2010

I'm running the climbing class (as will be in real life this coming thursday), and it seems like everything is going wrong. The projector doesn't work right; there's a tree right in the way (though we're not really outdoors, it still isn't quite like a classroom) and it makes it so that different parts of the image don't align, and I have to mess with it a lot trying to get a coherent image.

It seems that I never programmed all the slides to come in one sentence at a time; each one comes in as a static picture.

Then I realize that I forgot to make slides for one section, so I grab a piece of paper and a far blue sharpie and attempt to make some notes for what to say. The pen is really ragged and unreliable, so I end up with some very illegible notes, but enough to work from.

When it's go-time, I stand up with my notes and a stack of other papers, and with a joking flourish, throw them all into the air, intending to only keep ahold of the one I just made, which is the only one I need to finish the class. But somehow I lose it among the other papers that are now flung all over the room, under the tables and everywhere.

I get down on the floor and start looking for it, embarrassed at the delay of the class. Everyone is watching me, and at first nobody is helping, and then one or two people get down and also start looking. They're looking for several minutes before I realize that all the papers probably look the same, and they won't be able to find the one I need. I tell them to look for the one with big blue scribbly writing on it.
