Mystery Sounds, Earthquakes and Other DisastersfritzFeb 24, 2011

I'm in my office at home, with a huge rack of black equipment. It's supposed to be connected wirelessly to a musical source, but the music is coming out even when the source is off! I can hear it quietly in the headphones (*1). I find one potential problem, but it's still there. Natasha comes in from another room, and I demonstrate the problem to her.

Then I'm outside in my back yard, camping in a tent, I think to stay out of the house, away from my partner. I think there's going to be an earthquake, and it could be dangerous. There was just an earthquake in San Francisco (*2), so it could trigger one here. The trees could fall on me - would I be able to avoid them? Even if I were outside and standing up, I couldn't see the ones behind me. In my tent I'd be a sitting duck. I'd rather be in the house, sleeping in my own bed, where the house would offer some protection. Natasha comes out from the house, and through the tent wall, offers me some soup.

Then I'm on an old concrete bridge, talking to Natasha about our relationship. I think I was trying to find some compromise, but she says a week from Monday she's moving out, all the way out, and gone. As I'm talking, I'm starting to settle in on a ledge of dirt, over the rail of the bridge. But it occurs to me that if someone wanted to take a pee, this is where they'd do it, so I get up from there and lean against the guard rail.

Natasha walks away, down the bridge and along the sidewalk leading away, and Sydney follows her. I call Sydney back, but before reaching me she trots off into the road, along with one of Keta's kids, a two or three year old toddler. She just walks right into the crossing traffic, and I chase after her, but I can't get there fast enough. I call out to her, but her name (I think it's supposed to be Lydia) doesn't come to my mind, I just call out with the words I use with the dogs - "Hold up! Hold up! Hold up!" - but she doesn't notice, and proceeds into the traffic.

She is struck simultaneously by two cars coming from different directions, which hit in a pinch. Crossing the road I can see the remains, like a plastic doll's body, broken and in a pool of blood. The horror is overwhelming, and it's my fault. I think it can't be really happening, and if it is, I can't live with it, I have no choice but to get out my shotgun and blow my brains out.

(*1) I've been working with Bluetooth a lot lately.

(*2) There was recently an earthquake in Christchurch
