It's a very rare bird. A pretty girl on the metro, sort of like Jenny Precourt, tells me that she's looking for it. She understood that with $10,000 spent on the chase, she should be able to find one of these birds, and it would be worth it to her, just once to hold it and pet it and then let it go. I say I think my cat caught one, and she asks me what sort of cat. Just an ordinary cat, I tell her.

The girl represents your perception of women in general. You see them as dedicating themselves to the pursuit of things that may be beautiful but that are somewhat obscure, impractical, and not of lasting value. The ordinary cat represents what is practical and mundane. The fact that your cat found the bird (and perhaps ate it, for what else would a cat do with a bird?), but you can't remember for sure, shows that you think her goal is rather silly, actually.
