Flushing My Best CoinfritzAug 17, 2012

I find an old coin in my pocket, a donut-shaped coin from 1896. I show it to somebody at my parents' house, probably my brother Steve. I explain that I don't know where I got it, somebody must have just given it to me for change.

My dad is really interested in it, and he takes it and starts washing it off in the sink. He accidentally drops it down the drain, as though into a toilet, and then acting like he has an awesome plan, attempts to get it out by holding the coin against the side with a knife as he flushes it. I think this is not a very good plan, and indeed, it results in the coin being flushed down the toilet. Dad then takes apart some of the plumbing and comes out with a wire screen several feet square, with lots of debris caught in it, but not my coin.

I go back to my brother and start to explain my disappointment, but eventually my dad finds the coin and returns it to me.
