Hypothermic BabyfritzAug 23, 2012

I've been busy for a while, doing some sort of work, and now I'm done. I'm going out to my car, happy to be done.

As I am backing my car out of the parking spot, and man and woman start waving at me from behind, yelling to stop. There are two babies there on the pavement - my babies! Oh no, I completely forgot about them, and they've been abandoned all evening! My partner, their mother, dropped them off here for my care, and I totally forgot! I think she left them in the car for a while this morning by accident, but this is totally my fault!

I pick up the babies, who are less than a year old, aware but not yet toddling. They are cold from the pavement, one much colder than the other. I run back into the building to ask somebody to call an ambulance, and then I realize that the building is a hospital. I yell out for some doctor, any doctor to come and help me.

Two male doctors arrive and look at the babies, which I am still holding. One of them says "Well, this one is going to be fine, but there's not much we can do about that one. Classic signs of hypothermia." The other doctor sort of puffs out his cheeks and raises his arms, slightly bent, away from his sides, showing the signs of hypothermia, which is exactly what the baby looks like.

I say she seems ok, alert and alive, can't we just warm her up? Isn't there something that can be done?

"They don't usually survive hypothermia" he says.
