Italian Elevator ProblemsfritzOct 1, 2012

I'm in Italy. I'm driving, but I come to a place where I can't get through a doorway; it's too narrow. There's a line of people there trying to get through too, so we look at it together and determine that indeed it will not fit (*1). As a result, I have to ride down the elevator without it, come back up the stairs and get my car, which has now become a small two-wheeled push-cart, and wheel it down the stairs, and then take the elevator back up. As I'm going up the stairs I realize that most of that was unnecessary, and all I really had to do was push my cart down the stairs. What was I thinking?

The last thing to do is ride the elevator, but there are two guys messing with it, and chattering in Italian. One of them does something to the door, and some wheels like those on inline skates (*2) pop out of the bottom of it. They chatter on, trying to figure out what to do, and I'm very tired and bored, so I lie down on the floor of the elevator, as if napping.

One of them lapses briefly into English, and I understand him to say that they should just put it back together and get on with it. "I agree with what the guy said in English", I joke.

(*1) Today when I went out to my parents', two cars were parked too close together and my Subaru wouldn't fit between them, in a very similar way.

(*2) Also at my parents', some of the kids were wearing inline skates that surely provided the model.
