City Hike | | fritz | Apr 22, 2013 | I'm at the edge of the city, as if by Duniway looking up toward the hospital, but it is all wild territory and woods. There's a trail that winds up the hill, and I think I should take it because it's some sort of special day for biking. But it's sort of late in the day to be starting, so I don't think I'll make it to the top. I can see two snowy peaks, one closer and one further away, and I'm not sure which one is the right one.
But for now, I walk uphill on the trail. It's very rough and ungroomed, where I have to squeeze around some fenceposts and things. There are a couple people ahead of me on the trail, a smallish man and his big dumb brother (was I thinking about 'Of Mice and Men' earlier that day?). They are sort of in my way, but I speed up and pass them. The smaller one speeds up too, and won't let me pass him. We race until I run out of breath and slow down, and we start talking. He tells me about the old lady that owns this whole hill and park, apparently having filed some paperwork to exploit some legal loophole. | Next: Dangerous Wall |
