I'm sitting on my bed in a faded yellowish hotel room. Jeremy, a guy I know from the climbing club, is there, sitting on his own bed in the same room. He has a new hairstyle - it's shaved bald all over, but with a number of clumps, an inch or two in diameter, that are unshaven, and have a few inches of hair growing out. I ask him, in a ribbing way, why he has this new look, and he says very seriously that he just got out of jail, where he just got done serving time for marijuana possession.

But, I say, I thought they wouldn't put people in jail for that any more, since it's now legal in Oregon. He sort of shrugs, as if to say 'yeah, you wouldn't think so, but that's what happened.'
