Unfriendly Skunk NeighborhoodfritzFeb 11, 2017

I'm parallel parking my car in a suburban neighborhood, but I seem to be having trouble, like I'm kind of drunk or something. I keep not quite getting it right, and reparking. I see somebody open their door and look out suspiciously.

A woman comes out of her house and asks me what I'm doing, and I tell her I'm meeting a friend in a few minutes, so I was just planning to wait here and read or something. She seems to reluctantly assent, perhaps to tell me to park across the street, but it's clear they just don't want me here.

I get out of the car and start walking up the street, with a gaggle of people - some adult who walks with me, and some of my nephews or nieces a few paces ahead. Two neighborhood boys in their 20's are walking behind us, and when I look back at them, they awkwardly give me the rude hand gesture - awkwardly because he first does it with his palm toward me, then turns his hand around to the proper gesture.

I tell him he shouldn't do that, because of the kids, and ask him what the deal is, if we somehow offended him, or they just don't like strangers in the neighborhood. He tell me they just don't like strangers.

We come to a wide intersection, and see a skunk casually strolling across the road. We stop and stay away, and I take the opportunity to overloudly comment "well, no wonder they don't want people in their special neighborhood with skunks walking around".

Then we're trying to gather ourselves up, myself and my companions, and also our pets. There are a handful of cats involved, and four tiny kittens, but we can only find three. I have this feeling like it would be pretty disastrous to lose a kitten, like we had failed in our responsibility. But we find it, one of the other cats has it wrapped up in his fur.
