Salamandering and SnakefritzDec 12, 2017

I'm with my dogs, walking off-leash out in the woods. Somebody comes by and I start chatting with them about my dogs, who have are digging for salamanders that they find in the sand, which I call "salamandering". There is a small vertical section along the trail, a wall about a foot high, where I can see a salamander barely exposed in the loose sand, and the dogs are sniffing around and digging it out. But then in their digging, they expose a moderate-sized snake, like a couple of feet long and probably three-quarters of an inch in diameter. The snake is bright orange around the head, splotching to a brownish color moving back toward the tail, but the orange warns me that the snake is poisonous, and I fear for my dogs, so I jump up and strike it with my left hand, knocking it a few feet away, up the trail to the right. I hope that it will just wander away, but it doesn't, now it is after me, and it jumps up in the air, squiggling as it tries to land a bite on me, now laying on my side on the ground, and I slap it away again.
