First Baseball BackfritzApr 13, 2020

I'm at a Hops baseball game, but the stadium doesn't look the same. It's the first game after reopening from the coronavirus shutdown, and everybody is behaving awkwardly around each other.

I'm on the field, near the plate, looking out at the crowd, who are seated just behind the baselines, where should be open fields. Everyone is looking toward me, and my dad, who just came out of a door off to the third-base side, wearing a thin orange plastic coverall, like a rain jacket. He's supposed to be the umpire, apparently there being nobody else to do the job.

Somebody throws out a first pitch, rather badly I think, remarking that 90 feet is a surprisingly long distance (though in real life, the pitch is 60 feet, it is the basepaths that are 90 feet). But then the game stalls, because my dad the umpire has disappeared back through the doorway. Everyone waits a while, just looking at me, and finally my dad shows up and says he can't do it, his vision is too bad and he's too old. Seems like we're lacking an umpire. Maybe I can do it?
