I'm in my parents' yard, in the grassy area above the pond. There are a number of mole hills in the grass, and Bella (the dog) is digging in them, trying to catch a mole. I see a hole that is about a foot deep, in a perfect vertical cylinder about four inches in diameter. I point it out to Bella, and she dives in and starts digging, presently pulling out a rat. She doesn't seem to know what to do with it once she catches it, she lets it go, and it starts digging among some rocks, as if it could dig itself to safety. I guess I have to kill it, so I pick up a rock that doesn't seem quite big enough, and smash it on the head. It just keeps digging, and I wonder why I'm doing this, but I think I have to put it out of its misery, so I smack it again with the rock, harder this time. I wonder how I will know that it's dead, and I think, well I guess it'll just stop moving.
