Portland Penguin PlacefritzJan 21, 2007

Something big is happening in Portland, a war or celebration. I go up to the corner just up the hill from my house, where I can get a god view of the city. I can see fireworks, explosions, and lots of birds in flocks all over the city.

Then the birds seem to be gone. I start to point out that the birds are gone, but then there is a flock on the horizon, and suddenly a couple of penguins fly right by us, buzzing right around our heads and between us. There's one adult, and one baby, and the baby lands on Bill Bunnell's collar and gets tangled. I jump up to help, and I notice that it's a blue penguin. I untangle it, and then somehow it guides me to a nest nearby (in a simulated rock wall like at the zoo) where several very tiny pink baby penguins are squirming under a white covering.

I notice that there are more and more, around 20 tiny babies in this nest. It could not be the work of a single mother - the whole flock must have their babies here! It's very exciting to have discovered Portland breeding grounds for this rare breed, and I'm very excited to tell the authorities.

For some reason I think I handled the babies, and I'm concerned that the parents won't come back for them.
