On to MUNI!fritzFeb 17, 2007

We're on a bus, mom and dad and me, traveling in a foreign country. I think it's San Francisco, but all the locals look asian. There are some kids on the bus, apparently college students. The question arises as to what is the next stop, and the college students all answer together almost in a chant, "MUNI, MUNI", as if they are voting, telling the driver where to go.

I recognize that MUNI is the subway in the area, so I tell my parents that's great, we can get on the metro, get a day pass and go anywhere (in the real world, MUNI is the public transportation system in San Francisco, and BART is the metro train). We have no map, but I'm sure we can find one when we get there.

I see a little pile of mini-maps marked "MUNI", so I grab one and unfold it, trying to get a basic idea of the routes.

The bus stops at a hilltop park, apparently close to the metro stop. We start to disembark, but I stop and ask the driver for help refolding the map, which has also become a strange terry-cloth umbrella. He's supposed to know how to do this, and he's certain he can do it. But he takes it and struggles. He says to himself "What is with this?", and I tease him, "It's origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper-folding, you should know it well", which is a joke because he's asian but not Japanese. He laughs, and while the map/umbrella will collapse, it doesn't hold itself together. Joking some more, I say "No worries, I'll just carry it like this!", holding it in a very weird way so that it won't unfold, and hopping off the bus.

Mom and dad have already started on the path around to the metro stop, and I'm suddenly quite thirsty and I don't have anything with me except this map/umbrella. I see that mom has my daybag on her shoulder, apparently having grabbed it from the bus, so everything is ok.
