Road ScamfritzMar 4, 2007

I'm in a foreign country with several members of my family. We're in a volkswagen bug, and I'm driving. We come over the top of a hill, where we're stopped by several black men in heavy downy jackets.

They hurriedly ask us for our signatures and social security numbers, as if it is a security checkpoint, acting very official, but trying to push us through it before we can ask any questions. Everyone complies, feeling rushed and off guard.

Then they pull out little squares of paper and try to get our fingerprints. At that point I get out of the car and say hey wait a minute, we're not going to do this. They answer calmly and roughly that we have to, just be quiet and do what they say.

I say no, this is a scam and we're not going to do it. I say there's no way it's legal, just ask a lawyer, in fact, dad is right here, ask him! We turn to him (everyone is standing outside the car now) and he agrees with me, which appears to be the critical mass required to convince them. They say ok, never mind, and let us pass.

I feel like a hero for standing up to them when nobody else would. I get in the back, behind the driver's seat, and try to recline and take a nap.
