I'm out in the woods hiking with some people, right where the trail reaches a peak overhanging a river and switches back. Suddenly my brother Dave's friend Jack rides up on a four-wheel offroad cycle and misses the turn, plunging down into the river. Everybody thinks he's dead, but I scramble down the embankment to see if he can be rescued.

When I get to the water's edge I can see Jack, pale and naked, and floating a foot or so under the water and seeming dead. Again everyone thinks he's dead, but I think I can save him. I dive in the water and haul him out on the embankment, setting aside feelings of awkwardness due to him being naked.

When I get him out on the land, he is not showing any signs of life, but I check for his pulse in his neck and it is strong. I push on his chest and he spits out some water and wakes up. He seems to be ok, although many bones are broken, including some ribs, and he is in a lot of pain. He pulls himself up with my help and we look for a resting spot on the hill above.

We rest him on his back on the hill but he keeps slipping, so I am trying to dig a little trench in the hill for him to rest against.
