Computer, Audio, and ClutterfritzOct 20, 2007

I've just got a new computer, and it has a DAT drive that can easily archive the entire hard drive in minutes. I'm really happy, and I start a backup, getting ready to clear out the drive and start it over again with my own stuff. Then a girl (perhaps Tiffany) calls me from the living room (this is a house like my grandfather's, and my computer was in his 'study') to show me something. I come out, but I can't get through the doorway because of all these strings stretched randomly across the room. I think they'll get tangled, but Steve says just to go for it, and I'll make it through. I just go, and with little trouble I make it through.

The girl wanted to show me this new audio system feature; she's wearing headphones, and the sound comes from two different musical tracks; one when she faces one way in the room, the other when she faces the other. She's very excited about it, a feature she's always wanted. I seem to recall it being desired as well, although at the moment I can't see the point, since the two sources aren't in any way coordinated, just two different songs.

Now in the living room, I'm trying to tidy up the clutter. The girl suggests making a pile, and then whittling it down. But it seems I can't; I pile up volumes one to 5 of a black paperback book, and it can't be reduced. We start watching some music videos, but in between we notice an annoying buzz from the audio system. Somebody (Dave Mathew?) mentions it and I indicate that it's caused by this op-amp circuit I built with a diode in it. I think it was worse, but I replaced it with a transistor and it got better, but still not perfect. At this point, nothing can be done - we just have to turn up the DVD and turn down the master volume to mask out the noise.

We're sitting on the couch watching music videos on the TV, but somebody is annoyed because they need to do something else, and can't watch. But I explain it's ok for them to miss some, that's why we're just watching music videos.

Another scene, I'm driving along a road, and there is a long line of cars on the left shoulder. I need to join that line, but it's at a standstill, and my lane is moving. I see a spot between cars and try to manouver into it, but a big black bull jumps in the way and kicks at me, preventing me from merging. I swerve out and work around him, and manage to get in line.

I end up in an old school, very beautiful with high ceilings. A throng of students is everywhere, trying to find their classes and friends. I've lost my friend, and can't find him. Finally I sit down on a couch, among four centered in a square, the only place I can find a seat. I notice that all the others in the group are girls, except one shy asian boy who is to my right. I think that's ok.

I say I'm glad to see the girls, because one of them left some makeup at one of my parties. I pull it out of my backup to show it around to whoever can claim it. One of the girls, Amy Helsabeck from high school, moves onto my lap. Among the treasures are a couple of lipstick tubes wrapped like presents.

Another scene, I'm at home at an apartment like Scottsboro Square. In what would be the kitchen area, near the sliding glass door, are some musical keyboards, and Alona studies nearby. Natasha plays a descending riff on the keyboard, and I recognize it and finish the melody. The keyboard is dusty. Alona comments that all this stuff is set up, yet nobody ever plays it. I say that I play it when she's not around.
