Failing Park Building, and Lousy LunchfritzApr 7, 2008

I've just picked up Tom Williams at the airport, and then we park in a parking building downtown. As we get out of the car, we see two maintenance guys who have just poured some extra supports, large concrete knobs that come up from the floor like you see on a boat dock. The new ones they have poured are still soft, and we hear one of the guys say "well, if that doesn't hold 'er, we're going to have to evacuate this place."

As a joke, I run over to the side, to a spot that appears to have a different set of supports, as though the building is about to collapse, and stand there for a punchline. But Tom runs a different way, to a similar spot, and we both watch as the building starts tipping and all the cars come crashing down in a pile, narrowly escaping a crushing death.

Later I find myself in a lunch diner with several different counters, but they're too crowded to get a sandwich. There is another counter tucked away in a corner and I go over there, and it turns out to be run by a woman who is an old friend of mine. I say hello to her, and order a sandwich. She says they're almost out of meat and she doesn't want to cook any more, so she's sure it'll be ok with me if I only get half the usual meat. I play along just to be nice, but the sandwich is $14 and I'm thinking I won't go there for lunch again.
