Milou is curled up by the side of the road in front of my house, sleeping. I notice that she is on the road, but barely out of the path of cars.

Suddenly a large truck comes hurtling down the road, entirely filling up the lane. Milou is bumped to one side, and I run out into the road, holding out my hands to stop the cars. Milou climbs up onto the lawn terrace and is resting there. I examine her and notice that one of her ears is torn and slightly bloody, and she has lost some fur on her hind legs.
