Clandestine Bug Massacre, and Misusing Test StripsfritzAug 25, 2008

I'm joining a group for a climb, but it seems we're just meeting to discuss, and we're actually meeting to climb in the early morning, next day. I don't seem to be very ready.

I go home, which is a room adjacent to the laundry room, upstairs at my parents'. D is there, and we're in bed but I have to get up because I need to check on the computer and see what time the climb starts in the morning. Greg is the leader, and I think he forgot to publish the start time. But I need to know because I need to get up.

There are these large green bugs in the room, and I try to get them out by grabbing three of them in my hand and throwing them out the window but when I open the window there is a screen I don't notice, so I end up just throwing them against the screen and they don't go out. I try again, this time opening the screen also, but there are hundreds more outside and they try to come in and I end up trapping a handful of them in a slat between the top and bottom parts of the screen, and in frustration, push the slats together and intentionally smash a few dozen of them.

My mom happens to be upstairs, and at that moment all the doors are open and D speaks, so her presence, which was supposed to be secretive, is known. I play it off as just hanging around in my room, referring to the "bug massacre", but everyone is a little horrified by the cruelty of it all and I feel bad.

At some point, my dad finds one of Timmy's glucose test strips and puts it in his mouth, them asks me how to interpret the color. I show him the test panel, and his strip clearly indicates that his sugar is high. I start to worry that he has latent diabetes, but then I remember that these strips aren't supposed to be used that way (you're supposed to pee on them) and we're all going to have a good laugh.
