Rock Wall, Fire, and Back-Burning ManfritzNov 25, 2008

I'm climbing a rock wall, in a rather unnatural orange color, and there's something special to reach at the top. After I've climbed it once with some assistance, I re-evaluate, see some easy holds, and I say that next time I can free-climb it. But first I must wait, as someone else is on the wall now.

We are on the peak of a hill out in the woods, and over on the next ridge I see a forest fire. I remark that if we were way out away from civilization, it would be very dangerous, because we wouldn't know what it would do, and we couldn't escape quickly. Then I realize that we are out in the woods, and it is becoming dangerous. The flames lick the sky above the ridge, and it spreads faster than any fire I've ever seen.

One tentacle of the fire extends quickly through the woods, curving off to the left but meandering toward us like a truck on a dusty road. When it arrives, it turns out to be a burning man. He explains that he's trying to help control the forest fire by back-burning, but it isn't working.

Then he grabs me from behind as if in a big bear hug, and I am concerned about my back being burned, though it doesn't hurt.
