Rough Production DayfritzDec 3, 2003

I am down in the Production area, near the west end, talking to one of the techs. The building (very similar to this one) is located on an isthmus such that the production area overlooks the river, and on the other side, the city, which is on fire. It is night, and I can see flames behind the windows of tall buildings and other scattered locations.

I decide to go out to the tip of the isthmus, which is just outside the employee door, to get a better look. As I am there, a huge ship explodes on the river to the west, just out of view. I see a few large pieces fall on hapless souls nearer to the water, and pull out a camera to get some shots of the smaller shrapnel coming down on me over the building.

Then I realize the danger, abandon the photography, and climb down so that I am dangling over the river out of the way of falling objects. Then I fall into the river.

I swim around the south side of the building to a stand of trees, taking care all the while to keep hold of a small portable radio and a flashlight of the sort that attaches around the head for hands-free operation.

Once I climb out of the river, in the stand of trees not unlike those on our south side, I meet another AP employee, I think Vicki, who asks how it's going. I say I'm having a rough day.

(an interpretation by Tim Sauerwein)

The production area represents your technical abilities, which are built on a solid foundation of production experience. The river represents the Next Gen project, and the isthmus represents represents Audio Precision pushing into this project. The city, which is on fire, represents the rapidly changing and chaotic business climate where our customers live; only a successful Next Gen project (the river), separates our company from destruction.

You will become a key leader of the Next Gen project, and one of your first tasks will be to take a close look at the realities that the Next Gen project must face. During your investigation, one of our major competitors will exit the audio business, and some unfortunate professionals will be caught in its demise.

You will at first adopt a scientific approach to understanding the Next Gen requirements, but this task will be too overwhelming.

When you see how urgent things are, you will abandon this approach and jump into building a prototype. While doing so, you will be hoping to find innovative ideas (the radio) and to find a pathway to delivering a product in time (the flashlight).

The prototype will be successful (arrival at the trees), but your leadership role will be challenging, and some days will be rough.
