Exploring Trails, Strangers and Knee TroublefritzMar 27, 2009

I'm walking on a trail in a foreign country, perhaps New Zealand. It seems like I just arrived late in the afternoon, and I'm exploring the area to plan outings in the near future. I think I'm staying with somebody there for a few days, with my parents and some siblings, and we're going to do some hiking. It's a nice day, and the trail follow the bottom of a ravine, heading slightly downhill. On either side are long tall hills.

Looking back toward "home", I see a clearing on the sidehill, where the dirt is sliding down. I will definitely want to climb up there on a future excursion. The top of the ridge should be a cool destination.

It's getting late in the day, so I turn around and head back on the same trail. Soon I meet another group of hikers, who were going the other way, but are now also turning around. There are quite a few of them, and I think some kids, so I walk quickly on the trail to get ahead of them and have some solitude. But one of them is a thin man in excellent shape, and he stays right on my tail.

As I'm going slightly uphill and through some bushes, my knee suddenly locks up and I have a lot of trouble pulling that leg around the obstacles. I struggle with it, lifting my leg with my hands, with considerable difficulty. The man is still behind me.
