Catfish CatchingfritzMay 24, 2009

I'm swimming in a muddy lake. Somebody familiar approaches in a small dinghy, and I can large fish following behind them, with their mouths halfway above the water. As they get closer, I can see that they are catfish, and I wonder if they are also following me, perhaps interested in taking a bite.

The dinghy also stirs up a huge cloud of baby catfish, just an inch or so in length, numbering in the millions. I have a plastic cup about a quarter full of lemonade, so I chug it down so that I can use the cup.

I dip the cup into the cloud of tiny catfish, and immediately a larger one appears from the mud and attempts to take a nip at me. I exclaim this to the people in the boat, and they say yeah, of course they're going to do protect their babies.

So I dip very quickly, too fast for the big catfish and for the swarm to swim away, and get several babies in my cup. I look at them and pour them back, and then take another cupful, but this time catching only a couple.
