Return to Polyglot School | | fritz | Jul 5, 2009 | It's all snowy, and for some reason I've gone back to an old school I went to many years ago (but not specific from real life). The school is way up on a hill, but my truck has no trouble with the snow.
I talk to somebody at the school, as though a counselor or something, a large happy woman who just fawns over me. She is so delighted to see me, and impressed to see how super I am! I talk to her in German, saying something like "Ich habe so viel Deutsch vergessen" (*), and we talk back and forth.
She steps out for a second to talk to someone else, and I can hear that they are speaking Spanish. When she comes back, I comment "Espanol es la mas bella" (meaning "Spanish is the most beautiful"), and she laughs heartily.
Then I have to leave, but first I have to put on some complicated yellow footwear for the snow. These boots have a sole which latches into a larger flat surface like snowshoes. I get one latched with little effort, but the other just will not cooperate. I'm in the hallway outside the school offices, and a girl happens by and tries to help me, but it's not obvious to her either.
(*) The phrase means "I have forgotten so much German". I happened to hear a day or so ago on the radio, a fellow that attempted to say something like this, but used "vergasst", which apparently changed the meaning to "I have gassed so many Germans to death". | Next: I Liked It How I Had It |
