Singapore Sling Girl Insults Lazy OregoniansfritzJul 15, 2009

I'm in Singapore, traveling with some nondescript companions. They sleep, but I want to get out and see what's around. It seems there's always something to do in Singapore, I remember, like a "Singapore Sling"(*). I head out to find something to do.

I find myself ascending a metal staircase on the outside of a building, and chatting with a young Thai girl who is walking up also, wearing hot pink spandex pants. She was just married three days ago, and I'm surprised to hear that she is not with her husband. He is apparently on a business trip to Oregon, and they are preparing to move there.

Of course I tell her that I am from Oregon, and start asking her about her plans, and what she thinks of Oregon. She says that Oregonians are sooooo lazy. I'm not sure what to say about that - on the one hand, I should defend my territory, but on the other hand, maybe we are kind of lazy, and I just don't see a problem with that. I say something very neutral, like "You think so...?"

(*) - I didn't even know what a Singapore Sling was, until I looked it up later in real life. It's a mixed drink. I didn't even know where I would have heard this expression; it seemed completely unfamiliar to me. A couple days later I found the source: the song "Alkohol" by KMFDM/Skold, which I just got, and certainly heard numerous times in recent days. However, it's only said once and not in a point of emphasis, and I don't recall consciously noticing it.
