I'm driving, across a multilane road, but not at an intersection - it seems as if I am crossing from one driveway to another. It's in a city, with cutaway curbs where driveways access the main road.

As I am crossing the main road, a police car approaches from the right, in the farthest lane from me. I think that it will pass before I enter his path of travel, but it slows and stops in front of me, the rear of his car overlapping my targeted driveway by a foot or two.

I have to decelerate somewhat rapidly, stopping just about a foot from their car. Two cops get out, without noticing me at first, but then somewhat surprised by the position of my car. They seem momentarily not to know if they should address the situation, or stay on their earlier mission. I have to get out of there fast, as I have apparently drank two beers, and though I am not impaired, I don't want to around suspicion.

The car is a stick shift, and the angle is downhill, so to avoid sliding forward and hitting their car, I have to use the emergency brake and ease very carefully backward, but I manage to escape without incident.
