Just Popping In to Update Your WindowsfritzAug 11, 2009

I've come to help this 300-pound girl with some problem with her computer. It's late for such work, perhaps 11 at night, but I'm just stopping briefly. I forgot to call her and tell her that I was coming, and as she answers the door I apologize for coming so late, but I just have to update her Windows. I'm thinking that I would need to start the download today so that I could install it tomorrow, but I think maybe she has high-speed internet, in which case it would happen very quickly, or maybe she already has Windows Update turned on, in which case I wouldn't have to do anything. She seems to think that updating her Windows is a good idea.

Joe and his kids are there, and as I approach the computer, I notice that it has a gaming monitor set into the wall, shaped as though you are peering out of a football helmet. It makes me feel ill to try to use it. Joe laughs and says, here try this, here's how Aric uses it, and pushes something that magnifies it a few times. I try playing some fast-moving driving or cycling game, but it seems all distorted and I still don't like it.

I say I just have to do a Windows Update, so I want to switch back to the regular monitor.

The heavy girls' mother, who looks like an old woman Guadalupe I sometimes see at the doggie park, interrupts me and slips an envelope into my pocket. I ask what it is, she says she's just returning my envelope (which I apparently used the day before to give the girl $100), and she had slipped a check for $12 into it as well, because she appreciated my help and wanted to cover the cost of the solder.
