To Mom, Birthday 2012fritzAug 26, 2012

The days they fly by, and the months, and the years
seems we're all just so busy, right up to our ears
though we may have the best of the bestest intents
it's hard to keep track of the special events

though our calendars all have so many fine scribbles
they're sometimes obstructed by coffeelike dribbles
sometimes you remember, more often than not
and then buy them a card that says 'sorry, forgot'
or belatedly give them the presents they're due
so there won't be hard feelings - at least, very few

or sometimes the thing that your planning for days
- even months - can be subject to random delays
and so when the event comes, oh heck, you're not ready
like bread, when it hasn't had time to get bready

so you must make excuses, perhaps write a verse
so they won't think that they've been forgotten, or worse
that nobody loves you, and your life is cursed
and there's nothing so special 'bout october first

oh wait! what is this? I've been reading it wrong
I've been totally four pages off all along!
I was wondering why all these smiles were frowns
I've been holding the ups where there should have been downs!
and what year is it anyway? dang, I'm confused
the calendar parts of my brain must be bruised

but oh well, too late now, 'cause some presents can't wait
it's already here, there's no point to debate
so... it won't be belated, you needn't be worried
consider your birthday this year to be earlied!

and your present, it's probably hidden nearby
can someone go get it? at least, could you try?
and you'll guess from this next line, if I am not wrong
- I'm sure that she's ready to meet her new mom.

Happy Be-earlied Birthday Mom!
