I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, though I still squirm when here I am believing somebody and then they suddenly break into song, badly lip-synced, no less. Also thick accents. But the visuals are stunning, the music excellent, the characters fun (if a little simple), and there are some very clever touches. Check it out! Little girls would like it too, I suspect, and it's quite morally sound. |

fritz B | An fun ride through many layers of history and symbolism with a lot of action, a little mystery, and some compelling characters. As with any book adapted to a movie, it's a challenge to fit it all in, and the one weakness of the movie is that a few times the characters' only motives for saying what they said is that it was necessary to fill in that bit of the plot. I already read it, but I suspect for those that didn't, it would fly by very quickly and be hard to catch everything the first time, but it's all there - the movie is extremely full, and mentions some things very briefly. You'll want to see it again, or read it. Too much death for little kids, but unless you're offended by the conspiracy-theory-view of Christianity, you're very likely to enjoy it. |

The plot is mostly a tired one, the scrapping underdog with the big spirit... but it takes a twist at the end and slightly redeems itself. So if you get halfway through, don't give up. It'll get better, but there are a lot better movies. PG13 for violent boxing. |

fritz A | This is sort of like a classic nature film, where the cameras sneak around quietly filming animals in their native habitat, except it features a Mongolian desert family and their camels. Slow-moving, minimally subtitled, no narration, just footage. Visually superb and culturally fascinating. The slight plot is about an albino camel who is born, but the mother won't accept it, so a special ritual is required. PG for watching the difficult birth of a camel rather closely. |

While the movie ponders interesting themes, such as how much risk one should take in trying to fulfill one's dreams, ultimately it is not completely fulfilling. Not a lot happens in the story. Her career is mostly steady. The supporting characters are silly and unconvincing. But I did enjoy the film. |

steve B | After reading Fritz's review and then seeing the film, I was shocked to discover that it was yet another dose of liberal propaganda shoved down our throats by the greedy Jews that run Hollywood. The protagonist of the film is a highway prostitute. But rather than condemning her sinful lifestyle (which includes prostitution, homosexuality, rash driving, and even murder), the film attempts to elicit sympathy from the audience toward this misguided woman. Rather than truthfully showing how her tribulations are the just result of her long history of sin and debauchery, the audience is guided inexorably toward the conclusion that her actions were predestined, due only to the disorienting effects of childhood trauma. Would the God who destroyed Sodom understand this kind of moral relativity? I believe not. Another thinly veiled message of the film was the endorsement of homosexuality. One might presume that the incredibly hot girl-on-girl action was included in the film to attract the coveted 12 to 95 year old male audience, as well as the female twenty-somethings who enjoy the L-word on HBO. That's standard Hollywood procedure. But if you look closer you see that everything positive in the lives of the main characters springs from their lesbian relationship. Even the enjoyment of a cold beer is drawn into a correlation with girls going out, having fun, laughing together, and inevitably smooching drunkenly. Indeed, the film is downright anti-man, while trying to show that women are as capable as men, even in the male-dominated field of serial murder. In scene after scene the female heroine overcomes the oppression of men (some of them well-armed) and stands triumphant over their dead bodies. One of the more subtle, and harmful, messages of the film is its advocacy of euthanasia. Our protagonist is suicidal at the opening of the film, narrating that she sees no more value in her life (a common refrain of euthanasia patients). The decision is thwarted by her lesbian encounter, which temporarily gives her hope that there is something more to life than giving blow jobs. But things only get worse from that point on, eventually leading to her execution. The message couldn't be more clear: sometimes death is the best option. This film is rated R, a rating that appeals especially to children, toddlers, and teens because of the excitement and mystery that accompanies prohibition. Coincidence? Not likely. The money-grubbing Hollywood execs know that even if wise and virtuous adults see through the thin veneer of legitimacy around this film, our children will get the message. In conclusion, this film should be carefully avoided by righteous people. The only folks who are not likely to be harmed by this film, and may even enjoy it in all of its decadent glory, are those who are already hopelessly mired in the liberal lifestyle. For those people, this is an excellent film: intense, probing, and well acted. |

No plot worth mentioning, and totally unbelievable. Just silly violence. I'm not sure I'll even bother to see the sequel. PS: After I saw the second one, I appreciated this one a lot more, and upped my grade. This one didn't make much sense to me alone, but the two should really be appreciated as a whole, in which case they shine. |

It's about this guy (well, 2 guys) who are joined at the side. They both want different things, but they also want the other one to be happy and follow his dreams. Everything turns out (as usual in movies) at the end. It doesn't sound really awesome by my review, but it's pretty good, and I think worth seeing. I don't remember the rating, but I think it's ok for all ages. |

Ella is "blessed" with a spell as a baby that requires that she obey anything ordered of her. This makes her life very difficult. When her evil Step mother and Step-sisters realize this about her, she decides it is time to ask the fairy to take back the spell. In the mean time she has met the prince and fallen in love. Acting is mixed, but meant to be silly. The music is fun, late 70's. The girls loved this movie and would probably give it an A. For parents who are sensitive to such things, there is kissing and romance, not that atypical of any other fairytale romance. If you don't watch the whole movie, do watch the scene in the middle where Ella is told to "sing, sing louder, with more soul, dance" to the tune of Queen's "Send me someone to love" (title of song may be incorrect). It is hilarious and I'm sure they had a blast making the scene. |

There was quite a bit that was formulaic, it was generally politcally correct unlike the times it was filmed to represent. Maybe that was part of the original story. Some of the cinematography was cool, especially the dust storm! The girls got to watch part of this movie and it did open up some interesting conversation in regards to culture and science (dust storms, locusts & desert nomads). There are a couple of violent scenes (killing of people and hurting of animals) that might be difficult for a sensitive child. And for the record, I did some research.. Disney was promoting this as based on a true story, apparently the only person to document this amazing story is the person who was the star of it and its truth is debatable. |

However, it earns its R in nudity and adult situations, and isn't appropriate for children or young teens. |

I don't think it's rated, but would probably be R for strong language and coarse conversation. |

One thing the film did reasonably well was give us glimpses of life in the ghetto and of the gradual methods used by the Nazis to terrorize and subdue the Jews before eventually deporting them to concentration camps to be killed. |

It's in French, but translation isn't necessary since there's almost no dialog. But it doesn't need words to be funny. It follows the story of this old woman and her bicycling son, who is kidnapped for some reason and she must find him. She is aided by their faithful dog and some aging triplet lounge singers. But what about the square-shouldered (and I mean it) mob guys? It's a riot. If you have any soft spot for funny cartoons, don't miss it. It's not rated, but it would be PG or so for treating frogs roughly. No other vices. |

joe A | A great family movie. It's about a kid who is suffering from a family curse put on one of his great grandfathers who is sent to a jail-type camp where all the kids dig holes all day. There is a fairly deep plot surrounding the curse, the jail/camp warden, and some of the other kids there. The plot might be too complex for kids under about 8 or 10 years old, but otherwise this can be thouroughly enjoyed by all ages. Great performances from Sigorney Weaver and Jon Voight. |

fritz B | An excellent and very dramatic mixed-culture story about a Russian man and his French wife who return to Russia after WW2. They are promised amnesty and opportunity, but treated as traitors on their arrival, unexpectedly only a hair's breadth from execution or imprisonment for treason. They want to escape to the Western world, especially the French woman, but can hardly think the thought without being betrayed. If you can tolerate subtitles you won't be disappointed. |
Anger Management comedy, PG13 |
fritz C | A somewhat funny movie about a guy (Adam Sandler) who fumbles his way into being accused of having an anger problem, which must be treated in a most unusual way by Jack Nicholson, who all along appears to have serious anger issues. Not a classic, but I was amused, especially by the situations in which pathologically passive Sandler manages to get himself into anger trouble. Stretches believability somewhat, and attempts to resolve it in the end without particular success. Rated PG-13 for adult situations. |

fritz C | Not my type. A very serious movie about a man going through a sort of near-end-of-life crisis and rediscovery. Of course Nicholson gives a stellar performance as the old guy. But it's just sort of sad and pointless. R for showing Kathy Bates topless, which seems appropriate. |

fritz B | This movie could only be regarded as mediocre in reference to the first two groundbreaking Matrix movies. I thought it was excellent - very exciting and suspenseful, and lots of very fun things to look at. Thousands upon thousands of robots and huge machines. Even the ending was good, although it was arguably necessary to suspend believability long ago. Rated R for some reason I'm not sure. Perhaps profanity, a little violence. |

fritz A | Award-winning documentary from favorite corporate rabble-rouser Michael Moore. In his own inimitable way, Michael explores American guns, gun ownership, and gun violence. His way is slightly bumbling, curious, honest, fearless, and always entertaining. A must-see, regardless of your position on guns or gun laws. Whether he makes any real point remains in question, but that's not his objective. It's a great movie. I own it on DVD. |

It's about a Maori girl who's born a twin but her brother, who the family believes will be the new chief, dies just after birth along with their mom. Her dad leaves town and she's brought up by her grandpa. It's a great story with some funny dialog and some interesting Maori culture. Plus you get NZ scenery and accents.... : ) |

fritz A | One of my favorite movies of all time, mainly for its clever assembly. It follows the story of a man who can't make new memories, so he never remembers what just happened. The story is told in reverse, much in the same way as he fails to remember it. Lots of drama, and it certainly keeps you guessing until the end. R for violence, language. I own it on DVD. |

fritz A | An excellent movie. Dramatic, exciting, serious, and yet very cunningly and ironically funny, from the very first scene. It takes place in the end of the first Iraq war, and follows a handful of soldiers who set out on a mission to find some lost Iraqi gold. Rated R for one crude sex situation, war violence, gratuitous swearing. Stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube. I own it on DVD if you want to borrow it. |
